The Caskets

Courtesy private collection, Germany

Rectangular caskets were a form common throughout 17th century Europe. Four Jamaican caskets have been recorded to date, all of simple construction and with an average size of 9” x 6” x 3½”.

All the exterior surfaces are extravagantly engraved within scrolling foliate borders. The lids are engraved with the Jamaican coat of arms and Taino supporters, standing in an exotic landscape of trees and shrubs, and bound with silver mounts.
